do you have to give google your cell number in order to make an account?

i want to make a youtube but i need a google to make a youtube so i went to make a google and it said i need to give them my moble phone number. there is NO way i am doing tht. is there any other way i can sign up without all tht crap?
i tried leaving it blank and i didn t work!
is there anyway i can make a youtube w/o giving them my cell?
